Tapestry

Will Ross has a portfolio that stretches from British Telecom’s corporate social responsibility unit to the decidedly anticorporate mcspotlight.org.

Victoria Ward is with Sparknow, a small and irreverent Knowledge Management consultancy that mixes corporate, voluntary and public sector work.

BIOGRAPHY

Will Ross

Will is a veteran of the UK's voluntary sector and activist internet, with a portfolio that stretches from British Telecom's corporate social responsibility unit to the decidedly anticorporate mcspotlight.org. He has been running the Amnesty International uk site for six years and the Lord Mayor's Show site for five, and has created countless charity, community and campaigning sites.

His first website was a information and support site for Scope. It was built in 1995, and included the phrase 'if your browser doesn't support tables, click here', but managed to provide an online discussion room for people with cerebral palsy which is still flourishing.

His first proper internet job was at oneworld.net, and integrated design, programming and editorial work in a way that has persisted throughout his subsequent career. Having designed and built several iterations of that site as it expanded madly, he left to set up spanner ltd, a small but innovative company that divides its time between supporting the UK activist community and building sites for Oxfam, Scope, Amnesty and other titans of the charity world.

Will has never really pursued the awards scene, but there are a few trophies gathering dust: a DMA Gold Award for the first ever Amnesty online campaign, a 'Cool Site of the Day' award which will only impress people who were working online in 1996, a Yell award for oneworld, two shortlistings for the New Statesman awards (but no prizes) and about a dozen sites of the week, month and occasionally year in the internet press.

His occasional efforts to persuade people that an academic background in philosophy of language is a sensible preparation for life on the internet have rarely succeeded.
